Peer Support Program

ReturnToWorkSA offers a Peer Support Program to support accredited impairment assessors in their assessment practice.

The program provides access to experienced assessors called Peer Support Assessors who understand the demands and complexities of impairment assessment work. The Peer Support Program is available to assist accredited assessors at any stage of practice and can be accessed proactively or as needed.

The Peer Support Program is confidential and is designed to complement, not replace, an accredited impairment assessor’s professional judgement. 
 

What support is available?

Peer support may include:

  • discussing complex or challenging assessments
  • talking through assessment approaches and clinical reasoning
  • reviewing report structure and clarity
  • guidance on applying the Impairment Assessment Guidelines, the Return to Work Act 2014 and relevant AMA Guides
  • support when navigating uncertainty or judgement calls.

Support is tailored to individual accredited impairment assessor needs and focused on practical, peer-based guidance. 
 

Why access peer support?

Accredited impairment assessors may choose to access peer support to:

  • strengthen confidence in assessment decisions
  • maintain consistency, objectivity and fairness
  • sense-check interpretation in complex or borderline cases
  • support reflective practice and professional development
  • enhance report quality and clarity

Accessing peer support is a normal and supported part of assessment practice.

The Peer Support Program forms part of ReturnToWorkSA’s broader approach to accredited impairment assessor quality and Impairment Assessor Accreditation Scheme sustainability.  It recognises the value of professional connection and shared expertise in supporting high-quality assessments. 
 

How to access peer support

Accredited impairment assessors can access the Peer Support Program through the South Australian Post Graduate Medical Education Association (SAPMEA), the administrative provider of the program. You can contact SAPMEA on8239 0786. To find out more about the program follow the link below.
