Noise-induced hearing loss - for employers
Employers in South Australia have a responsibility to identify and manage noise hazards to reduce the risk of work‑related hearing loss. Effective prevention measures include:
- identifying and assessing noise in the workplace
- implementing controls to eliminate or reduce worker exposure to workplace noise
- ensuring personal protective equipment provided to workers is used correctly, maintained and is appropriate for the noise exposure
- enforcing hearing loss policies and procedures
- undertaking health monitoring of workers exposed to noise
- undertaking pre-employment and post-employment assessments of hearing for workers exposed to noise.
More information regarding prevention and safety management of noise-induced hearing loss is available in this SafeWork SA webinar recording and on the SafeWork SA website.
Assessing hazardous noise in the workplace tool
This free tool for employers and health and safety representatives is designed to help you review how you assess and manage the risk of hazardous noise in your workplace, and to identify any opportunities for improvement. The tool will assist with creating and implementing an action plan and lets you know where you can go to get further work health and safety information and assistance.
The tool is designed to help you quickly identify any areas where you may require a more detailed review and is not a replacement of your normal hazard and risk assessment process. It takes around 10-15 minutes to complete.
Consult with workers and health and safety representatives when identifying noise hazards, and keep records of assessments and controls implemented.
