Take 5 for safety

Video transcript

DESCRIPTION:

A man stands in front of a blue backdrop. He has a shaved head and stubbly beard and wears a navy-blue polo shirt monogrammed with ‘Master Builders South Australia Apprentices’ on the left breast.

Elsewhere, a man walks along a footpath outside a building that has a sign on it that reads ‘Master Builders Association of South Australia’. A second sign reads ‘MBA Insurance Services.’

BEN MORGAN:

My name is Ben Morgan. I'm a Field Coordinator with the Master Builders Association. I work within the group training organisation, working with the apprentices and our host employers.

DESCRIPTION:

On a white background, a dark-grey and red logo reads ‘Return to Work SA’. The SA lettering is coloured red and has a smaller logo above it. The small logo features a red line above a lime green line that curve into each other to form a stadium shape. Further grey text below reads ‘Make every day start with safety’.

BEN MORGAN:

All Master Builders apprentices have access to the Master Builders application.

DESCRIPTION:

Inside a room, Ben sits at a desk with  a young man and a small laptop computer.

BEN MORGAN:

In this, there's an apprentices section where they have access to a Take Five or pre-start form.

DESCRIPTION:

Outside, Ben stands with another man and uses his smartphone. They both wear yellow Hi-Vis vests.

BEN MORGAN:

They do this online, they submit it each day before starting work. Essentially, it's about identifying hazards associated with simple tasks and implementing control measures before starting work. It's about getting the apprentice to have risk management as part of their job planning process for the day.

DESCRIPTION:

Outside a construction site, a young man stands and wears a white hardhat and a yellow Hi-Vis shirt.

TEXT: Wyatt – Apprentice

WYATT:

Some jobs can be very high risk. Lots of height work, lots of dangerous areas that we're working in but sometimes it can be just basic things like PPE and just be a cautious where you're working as well. So, yeah.

DESCRIPTION:

Wyatt stands outside the construction site with Ben and another man who wears an orange Hi-Vis vest over a blue collared shirt. Ben uses his smartphone as they talk.

WYATT:

So yeah, the Take Five, it's easy to use. It's very helpful and definitely helps out, yeah. We do a pre-start on the job here. I just take a quick photo of the pre-start, send it through the app, and then that way Ben can look through the Take Five and double-check that what I'm doing is correct.

DESCRIPTION:

The man wearing the orange Hi-Vis vest and blue shirt from earlier.

FRANK:

So every morning we have a pre-start before the men go to site.

DESCRIPTION:

A woman and two men stand inside a large warehouse and look at an open laptop computer as they talk. Each of them wears a hardhat and yellow Hi-Vis clothing.

FRANK:

And what we do is, we discuss issues like what's happening on the site, say there's a crane or if there's any pumping or concrete being done on-site.

DESCRIPTION:

In a montage, a crane hoists materials above a construction site; a hose pumps concrete onto some reo bars and formwork; a float moves across some freshly poured concrete.

FRANK:

We go through, we discuss what the safety standards are there.

FRANK:

And then the students that do the Take Five reflect on that and they sort of tick off some of the concerns and issues they have. And it sort of just gives them that little bit of reminder and it's a little bit of a stop, a brief, a few minutes just to think about the job, prepare themselves and plan for the day.

Using the Take Five system with toolbox meetings as well that we have weekly, it keeps the students very well informed in what they need to do for safety.
