Mental Health Month 2025
1 October 2025
In addition to being National Safe Work Month, October is also Mental Health Month - a national event with a spotlight on improving awareness and interest in mental health and wellbeing.
The theme this year is ‘Connecting when it counts’. This provides an opportunity for workplaces to consider how they build connection, as part of a mentally healthy workplace.
Here are some ways to help your workplace to get started or continue a mentally healthy workplace journey.
How to create a mentally healthy workplace
A mentally healthy workplace is a workplace that protects, responds to, and promotes positive mental health for everyone. A mentally healthy workplace places the same importance on both mental and physical health and safety in the workplace.
It has a positive workplace culture where people feel supported and able to do their best work, regardless of whether they have a mental health condition. With one in five Australians affected by mental health conditions, it’s likely some of your employees are dealing with issues such as depression or anxiety. When mental health conditions go untreated, it can lead to lower productivity, increased absenteeism, and more work-related injury claims.
Mental Health Awareness Month provides an excellent opportunity for workplaces to not only assess their efforts in fostering a mentally healthy environment, but to also consider this year’s theme of connecting when it counts. The theme reminds us that timely conversations about our mental wellbeing can make all the difference. Whether it’s checking in on a work mate who seems withdrawn, reaching out during major periods of change within a workplace, or simply creating a space for honest conversations in teams, these connections form the foundation of good mental health at work.
